The Root Canal Procedure

Root canals are relatively straightforward procedures that require two visits to the dentist. The root canal procedure is as follows:

  1. We provide general anesthesia and numb the treatment site to prevent any pain during treatment and prepare the tooth for drilling.
  2. The decayed enamel is drilled and cleared away, continuing down into the tooth’s pulp chamber.
  3. We clean away the diseased pulp inside the tooth using the latest specialized tools.
  4. A permanent filling made out of rubber paste called gutta-percha fills the canals. The chamber above the canals is filled with either a temporary or permanent dental filling.
  5. If there is a bacterial infection or tooth abscess, antibiotics are prescribed.
  6. The treated tooth is capped with a dental crown or fitted with a post and crown during the second appointment. The tooth is capped because the extensive drilling can weaken the walls of the tooth, and they will not stand up to the same wear and tear that they could initially endure. The crown will protect the tooth and look just like your natural teeth.
