Root Canal Therapy

Gateshead Dental is proud to provide root canal treatment to our patients in Stoney Creek and the Hamilton area.

Protect Your Oral Health With Root Canal Treatment

Underneath your tooth’s outer enamel, within the dentin, is an area of soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains nerve fibres, arteries, veins, lymph vessels, and connective tissue. A tooth’s pulp can become infected from a deep cavity, a fracture, or injury. When this happens, the pulp can die, leading to dental pain usually felt when biting down, chewing, or eating hot or cold foods and drinks.

Once the pulp starts to decay, your tooth won’t heal by itself. You will need root canal therapy in Stoney Creek to ensure you maintain your tooth’s full function. Call us today to inquire about root canal treatment.

Painful Symptoms You Need Root Canal Treatment

Many patients wait until they are experiencing tooth pain to visit the dentist. This can be a bad idea. The sooner you receive dental care, the more chances you have of stalling more serious effects; this procedure, if performed in time, can prevent the loss of the affected tooth.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact us immediately to book an appointment with our dentist.

  • Severe pain in teeth while eating or when pressing on a tooth
  • Teeth are sensitive to hot or cold foods or cold air, and pain that lingers even after removing the stimulus
  • Dark spots or areas on a remaining tooth structure
  • Tenderness, swelling, or an abscess that looks infected or pus-filled in the gums near the affected tooth
  • Pain or swelling in the sinus cavity above the tooth or the lymph nodes under the jaw
  • Severe decay

The Root Canal Procedure

Root canals are relatively straightforward procedures that require two visits to the dentist. The root canal procedure is as follows:

  1. We provide general anesthesia and numb the treatment site to prevent any pain during treatment and prepare the tooth for drilling.
  2. The decayed enamel is drilled and cleared away, continuing down into the tooth’s pulp chamber.
  3. We clean away the diseased pulp inside the tooth using the latest specialized tools.
  4. A permanent filling made out of rubber paste called gutta-percha fills the canals. The chamber above the canals is filled with either a temporary or permanent dental filling.
  5. If there is a bacterial infection or tooth abscess, antibiotics are prescribed.
  6. The treated tooth is capped with a dental crown or fitted with a post and crown during the second appointment. The tooth is capped because the extensive drilling can weaken the walls of the tooth, and they will not stand up to the same wear and tear that they could initially endure. The crown will protect the tooth and look just like your natural teeth.
