Common Dental Emergencies
There are many common dental emergencies; if you are experiencing one of these or have severe oral or dental pain for any reason, you should call to book an emergency dental visit right away. We will make every effort to help you as soon as possible. Until you have been treated, don’t try to eat or apply muscular pressure to the area.
Fractured Tooth
Dental emergencies involving a fractured or fully broken tooth can happen from falls, sports mishaps, and other accidents. Please pay close attention to the size of the dental fracture and the severity of tooth pain associated with it.
Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water, but don’t try to clean the area. If a piece of tooth has broken off and you have it, place it in a glass of milk or warm salt water and bring it with you. You can take an over-the-counter oral pain killer medication to ease the pain from your broken tooth, but you should still phone our dentist immediately, so that the tooth can be treated to prevent further damage.
Swelling And Severe Pain
Facial swelling or swollen and bleeding gums that appear suddenly could be a sign of infection. The area will feel warm and tender, look red, and you may see pus. A fever is another symptom of infection. You may also experience pain when chewing or touching a specific area of the mouth.
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, then apply a cold compress for cool pressure to the site. Call us immediately. Infection is a serious health issue.
Abscessed Tooth
An abscess is usually identifiable by severe swelling and redness. An abscess is a pocket of pus that is trapped; with an abscessed tooth, this typically happens at the root of the tooth. This can be one of the more dangerous of the dental emergencies, since if left untreated, not only will it cause severe pain, but the infection can spread and become life threatening. You can take an over-the-counter pain killer and use a cold compress to help until your visit to our dental office, but don’t delay treatment.
We’ll examine the area and prescribe an antibiotic or pain killer if an infection is present before performing a therapy such as a tooth extraction, root canal, or other dental procedure.
Extruded Or Loose Tooth
When a tooth has been forced backward or forward in its socket, it has been extruded. Do not try to move the tooth back into position; call our team immediately.
Facial Fracture Or Uncontrolled Bleeding
A facial fracture or a broken jaw is a medical emergency that can affect the teeth and gums. Patients should seek emergency dental care at a hospital and follow up with our dentists for additional treatment for the broken jaw or other facial fracture.
If you have a bitten lip or cut inside your mouth with uncontrolled bleeding, apply direct pressure with a sterile cotton cloth or gauze pad against the area until the bleeding stops. If it still won’t stop, seek emergency care at a hospital and follow up with our dental office for any needed dental care.
Tooth Knocked Out
Have you had a tooth knocked out? If an entire tooth is knocked out completely from its socket, there is a small window of time when we can re-implant the tooth, as long as the root is not damaged. After controlling the bleeding, transport the tooth in a glass of milk, or warm water with salt, or gently fit it back into its socket and call us immediately! Do not try to clean the tooth or the socket.
